HLBS Welfare Program
Since 1922, the Hellenic Ladies Benevolent Society has offered assistance and support to underprivileged people of the Hellenic community in Montreal and its surrounding areas.
Thousands of people and children have been helped through our:
- Crisis Intervention Program: for food, rent, clothing, furniture, utilities, medical expenses, etc. in providing emergency relief throughout the year;
- Compassionate Aid: supplementary assistance at Christmas and Easter, burial plots and expenses;
- Community Services: summer camps for underprivileged children and for children with special needs; educational assistance as well as referrals to government and social agencies.
The “Marathon Agapi” Radiothon is the major fundraiser for our Welfare Program. This radiothon has been held through CFMB radio since 1969 on air time donated by the station.
In summary, the success of our Marathon Agapi has been made possible by the enormous generosity of the previous owners of CFMB, the Stanczykowski Family and now by the new management, Evanov Radio and the CFMB Team. We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to Michael Tellides, Producer and Director of the Hellenic Radio Program and Rena Papathanakou, former radio host of CFMB, who have both been dedicated participants since the beginning and to our generous donors and committed volunteers.
